Description
Learning the facts that make a state its own place – its capital, its biggest city, the tree and the flower it chose as symbols – is how a young student first gets a feel for geography. This North Carolina Word Search Worksheet turns six of those facts into a puzzle a 3rd grader can solve on their own, so the names stick through searching and writing rather than memorising a list. Finding a word letter by letter slows a reader down just enough to really see how it is spelled, which is exactly what a proper noun like Raleigh or Charlotte needs.
The page works in two parts. Part A of this North Carolina states worksheet is an eleven-by-eleven letter grid holding all six box words, printed across, down and on the diagonal so students have to scan in every direction. Part B turns the puzzle around: six clues, one per word, each naming a different North Carolina fact – the state capital, the biggest city, the state bird, the state flower, the state tree and the ocean along the coast. Print it, let students circle first, then have them write each word beside the clue it matches.

Hand out the page with a state map and ask students to point to Raleigh and Charlotte before they start searching. Time the puzzle as a five minute warm up, then work through Part B together as a class discussion rather than silent seatwork. Ask each student to add one more North Carolina word they know to the bottom of the page and explain why it belongs.
