About this resource
Description
Nouns are the naming words children meet in every sentence they read, and this nouns fill in the blanks worksheet gives them focused practice naming people, places, things, and ideas. Third graders already know that a noun names something, but the harder work is choosing the right noun for a sentence and then explaining what kind of noun it is. This worksheet asks for both, so students move from simply spotting nouns to using them with purpose.
The worksheet is built around one afternoon at the beach, so every sentence gives real context clues. Students begin with a word box of six nouns and complete six sentences, then decide whether a bold noun names a person, a place, a thing, or an idea, and finish by finding all three nouns hiding in a single sentence. Print this nouns fill in the blanks worksheet for morning work, a guided reading group, a literacy center, or homework, and use the included answer key to check the page in seconds.
What’s Included
- A one-page printable worksheet with three sections of noun practice
- A six-word noun box and six fill-in-the-blank sentences with context clues
- Five sentences for naming a bold noun as a person, place, thing, or idea
- Two sentences in which students find and write all three nouns
- A complete answer key on the final page
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- Context clues teach students to choose a noun that fits the meaning of the whole sentence, not just any word that sounds right.
- Sorting nouns into people, places, things, and ideas makes the abstract category of an idea noun concrete and memorable.
- Finding every noun in a sentence builds the close-reading habit students need for grammar tests and for their own writing.
Teachers and parents can stretch this 3rd grade nouns worksheet in a few easy ways. Ask students to read each finished sentence aloud and explain why their noun is the only one that works. Challenge early finishers to write two new sentences using the leftover words from the noun box, or to circle the nouns in a paragraph of their own writing. In a small group, cover the word box and see how many nouns students can supply from memory before revealing the choices. Because the whole page shares one beach story, it also pairs well with a quick shared-writing lesson about the day the class would spend at the shore.
