Telling odd numbers from even numbers is one of the first real number-sense skills a second grader builds, and the Odd Number Spider Maze Worksheet turns that skill into a puzzle worth finishing. Instead of reading a list of numbers and labeling each one, students hunt for a path. Every number on the path is odd, every number off the path is even, and the only way through the grid is to decide, one number at a time, which is which. A child who can look at 47 and know instantly that it is odd is a child who is ready for grouping, doubling, and sharing equally.
This printable gives students a forty-eight square grid of two-digit numbers with a start arrow at the top and a finish arrow at the bottom. Coloring each odd number reveals the one route that carries the spider across the grid to his web. Because every odd number lies on that route and every other square is even, the maze has exactly one solution, so students can check their own work by looking at the shape of the path they colored. A second section asks them to classify eight more numbers, circling the odd ones and crossing out the even ones, so no number is left unjudged.
