Learning about the fifty states starts with the words that name what makes each one special, and this Ohio word search worksheet gives third graders a fun, hands-on way to meet six of them. Ohio has a capital city where state laws are made, a state tree that drops shiny brown nuts every autumn, a state bird and a state flower, a busy port on the shore of Lake Erie, and wide farm fields of golden corn. Each of those ideas is carried by a single word, and finding that word in a puzzle grid is a far friendlier introduction than a page of facts to memorize.
This printable is a two-part activity. In Part A, students hunt for all six word bank words hidden across, down and on the diagonal in an eleven-by-eleven letter grid. In Part B, they read six short clues and write the matching Ohio word on the line, so the words they just circled become words they can actually define. Every clue points to exactly one box word, which means students have to read carefully rather than guess. An answer key is included on the last page, so checking work takes seconds.
