About this resource
Description
Every child has a favorite pair of socks, and sooner or later that pair gets a hole in it. This Old Socks Reading Comprehension Worksheet turns that everyday moment into a short informational passage about why socks wear out, how to make them last, and what to do with them when they are finished. Readers learn that the heel and the toes rub against a shoe with every step, that hot water weakens cotton threads, and that a small hole can be mended by darning. Second graders finish it reading informational text with more confidence and thinking about taking care of the things they own.
This printable 2nd grade old socks worksheet is built the way a comprehension assessment is built. Page one carries a full-color watercolor scene and a 163-word informational passage written to the second-grade reading level. Page two holds four multiple-choice questions and one written response that asks children to name two ways to help socks last longer. The questions move across the whole passage, from a key detail to a cause, a vocabulary word and a real-life use, so children cannot answer everything from the first paragraph alone.
What’s Included
- One informational reading passage with a full-color illustration
- Four multiple-choice comprehension questions
- One written response using evidence from the text
- A complete answer key
Why It Helps Kids
The passage is measured to the second-grade reading band, so children practice reading on grade level instead of a grade or two above it. Every question can be answered from a single sentence in the text, which teaches children to go back and find evidence rather than rely on memory. And the vocabulary item asks children to work out the meaning of darning from the sentence around it, a skill every reading test checks.
Teachers and parents can build on the passage in a few minutes. Ask children to underline the sentence that answers each question before they fill in a bubble. Bring in a worn sock and have children find the thin spots at the heel and toes. Make a class list of other ways to reuse old clothes instead of throwing them away. Or let children design a sock puppet on paper and write two sentences about it. Each idea keeps the learning going after the Old Socks Reading Comprehension Worksheet is done.
