About this resource

Description

Proofreading is the last and most important step of the writing process, and it is where a careful reader catches the spelling mistakes that slip past a first draft. This proofreading spelling errors worksheet gives 3rd Grade students focused practice at spotting misspelled words inside real sentences and a real paragraph, and then writing each word the right way. Third graders are expected to spell grade-level words correctly and to check their own work, so this skill shows up in every subject — journals, science notes, book responses, and state writing tests.

This 3rd grade spelling proofreading worksheet is organized into three short parts that build on each other. In Part A, students circle the misspelled word in five sentences and rewrite it correctly on the line beside it. In Part B, they read a short paragraph about a school garden, circle the five words that are spelled wrong, and write each correction on a numbered line. In Part C, students rewrite two complete sentences that each contain two spelling mistakes. Use it as morning work, a writing-center task, homework, an editing warm-up before a writing assignment, or a quick assessment. Print one copy per student and use the included answer key for fast checking or for student self-correction.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • 3 proofreading activities: 5 sentence corrections, a 5-error paragraph edit, and 2 full sentence rewrites

This proofreading spelling errors worksheet helps children learn in three ways. First, it moves students from simply recognizing a misspelling to producing the correct spelling, which is the step that actually builds spelling memory. Second, the paragraph in Part B places the errors in connected text, so students practice proofreading the way they will have to proofread their own writing instead of hunting for mistakes in an isolated word list. Third, the sentence rewrites in Part C ask students to hold two corrections at once and produce a clean, finished sentence, which is real editing work rather than a matching exercise.

Teachers and parents can extend the skill by having children reread their own writing with a colored pencil and circle any word that looks wrong, then check it in a dictionary. Try a daily edit routine on the board, keep a personal spelling notebook of the words each child misspells again and again, or play a partner game where students swap papers and hunt for planted errors. Reading a draft aloud slowly, word by word, is another simple strategy that helps young writers hear and see the mistakes they would otherwise skim right past.
