Children love to splash in a puddle after a storm, but few stop to ask where that water came from or where it goes. This Puddles Reading Comprehension Worksheet answers both questions in a short informational passage about how puddles form and dry up. Readers learn that rain can fall faster than the ground can soak it up, that water collects in low spots on hard ground like sidewalks and roads, and that the sun slowly turns a puddle into a gas through evaporation. Second graders practice reading informational text while picking up real weather science.
This printable 2nd grade puddles worksheet is built the way a comprehension assessment is built. Page one carries a full-color colored-pencil scene of a rainy sidewalk and a 155-word passage written to the second-grade reading level. Page two holds four multiple-choice questions and one written response that asks children to name two ways the water in a puddle goes away. The questions move across the whole passage, from a key detail to a cause, a vocabulary word and a safety tip, so children cannot answer everything from the first paragraph alone.

Why It Helps Kids
The passage is measured to the second-grade reading band, so children practice reading on grade level instead of a grade or two above it. Every question can be answered from a single sentence in the text, which teaches children to go back and find evidence rather than rely on memory. And the vocabulary item asks children to work out the meaning of evaporation from the sentences around it, a skill every reading test checks.
Teachers and parents can build on the passage in a few minutes. Ask children to underline the sentence that answers each question before they fill in a bubble.
