About this resource

Description

Recognizing fractions starts with one big idea: a fraction names equal parts of a whole. The denominator tells how many equal parts the whole is cut into, and the numerator tells how many of those parts we are talking about. This recognizing fractions worksheet helps third graders connect the numbers in a fraction to the shaded parts they can see and count.

About This Worksheet

In Part A, students look at six fraction models (circles, bars, and sets of dots) and write the fraction for the shaded part of each one. The models use halves through eighths, so children have to count the equal parts every time instead of guessing. In Part B, students work the other way: they read a fraction and shade a circle to match it. Have students count the total parts first, write the denominator, and then count the shaded parts for the numerator.

What’s Included

  • One printable 3rd grade fractions worksheet with two parts
  • Part A: six models to name with a fraction
  • Part B: four circles to shade to show a fraction
  • A complete answer key

Why It Helps Kids

First, it builds a clear picture of what the numerator and denominator mean. Second, seeing circles, bars, and sets side by side shows children that a fraction works the same way on any model. Third, shading a fraction by hand turns a symbol into something students can see, which makes comparing and adding fractions easier later on.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents

Use this recognizing fractions worksheet as a warm-up, a math center, or homework after a lesson on equal parts. Ask students to explain one answer out loud using the words numerator and denominator. For extra practice, fold paper strips into equal parts and have children shade and name their own fractions.
