About this resource

Description

Knowing a few fire safety words and the number to call is one of the first real safety lessons a young child can master. This fire safety worksheet introduces four everyday helpers a first grader will recognize right away, the smoke alarm, the helmet, the fire truck and the hose, and pairs them with the words that name them. The page stays warm and positive throughout: it shows the helper and the tools, never a fire, so children learn the vocabulary without any of the worry.

Part A is a picture to word match. Students read each word, look at the pictures, and draw a line to connect the pair. Because the words are set in a large, easy-to-read type and the pictures are clear, beginning readers can work through it on their own. Part B moves from reading to writing: children trace 9 1 1 in a dotted handwriting font, then write the number themselves on the line below. Print this 1st grade community worksheet for a fire safety unit, a community helpers lesson, or the week of a school fire drill.

What’s Included

  • One printable fire safety worksheet in PDF format
  • A four-pair picture to word match covering smoke alarm, helmet, fire truck and hose
  • A trace-and-write practice line for the number 9 1 1
  • Large primary type and a manuscript handwriting font sized for first graders
  • A complete answer key

This activity helps kids in three ways. First, it builds safety vocabulary that a child can actually use, so the words mean something outside the worksheet. Second, matching a picture to a word is exactly the decoding practice a first grader needs, and the pictures give a beginning reader a way in when a word is new. Third, writing 9 1 1 by hand turns an abstract fact into muscle memory, which is what a child needs in the moment it matters.

Teachers can send this page home after a fire drill, use it in a community helpers center, or pair it with a visit from the local fire department. Ask students to point to a smoke alarm in your classroom and explain what its beep means. Parents can walk through the house together and find the smoke alarms, then practice saying the family address out loud after saying 9 1 1. For extra practice, have your child draw and label one more fire safety helper on the back of the page.
