About this resource
Description
Sleep is one of the most overlooked parts of health and fitness, and it is one of the easiest for students to take charge of. This Sleeping Health and Fitness Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives 4th graders an original two-page nonfiction passage that explains what really happens inside the body during a night of rest — the light stages, deep sleep, and REM sleep — and why each stage matters for growing, healing, learning, and feeling good the next day.
The passage is written on grade level and runs across two pages, so students build real reading stamina before they answer a single question. A third page holds the comprehension items, and the answer key is the final page. Use this 4th grade health and nutrition worksheet as a science reading block, a close-reading lesson, a sub plan, a homework page, or a warm-up during a health unit. Students read the whole passage first, then go back into the text to find the evidence for each answer.
What’s Included
- 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
- Answer key
- A two-page original nonfiction passage about sleep, health, and fitness
- 4 fill-in-the-bubble comprehension questions covering main idea, vocabulary in context, sequence, and cause and effect
- 2 written-response questions that ask students to support an answer with details from the text
This resource helps kids in three ways. First, it pairs a science topic they live every night with a reading task, so the content feels worth reading and the vocabulary sticks. Second, every question in this sleeping health and fitness reading comprehension worksheet is answerable from the passage, which trains students to go back into a text for evidence instead of guessing from memory. Third, the two written-response items give students practice explaining their thinking in complete sentences — the exact skill state reading assessments ask for.
Teachers and parents can stretch the topic well past the page. Have students keep a one-week sleep log and graph their hours, then compare the class averages to the nine-to-twelve-hour range in the passage. Ask small groups to design a bedtime routine poster, or to turn the sleep stages into a labeled diagram or a short skit. Younger siblings can join in with a movement break before a calm-down reading time. Pair the sheet with a nutrition or exercise lesson so students see sleep as one of the three legs of health and fitness.
