Reading comprehension is the skill of understanding, remembering, and thinking about what a story says. Second graders are moving past sounding out words and into following a whole story from beginning to end, and they do that best with short, friendly texts they can finish in one sitting. This Snowman Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives them exactly that: an original winter story about two children building a snowman, followed by questions that ask them to find the main idea, recall details, and put the events back in the right order.
The worksheet opens with a full-color illustration and a 162-word story set in a snowy yard. Students read the story on page one, then turn to page two to answer four multiple-choice questions and number four story events in sequence. This Snowman Reading Comprehension Worksheet helps children learn in three ways. First, the story is written at a second grade reading level, so students spend their energy on understanding the story rather than on decoding the words. Second, the questions stretch different comprehension muscles: one asks for the main idea, others ask for a detail and for a cause, so children practice far more than simple recall. Third, the sequencing activity sends children back into the text to think about order, which is the very skill they will lean on when they start summarizing and retelling longer stories.
Read the story aloud together first, then let children read it again on their own and notice how much more they catch the second time. Ask them to retell it using the words first, next, then, and last. Children can also draw their own snowman and label each part, write one more sentence to add to the ending, or take turns acting out the steps of building a snowman with a partner. A walk outside on a cold morning, or a bowl of snow on the table, makes the whole story feel real.
