Sort Classify and Count Worksheet

Sorting is the very first thing a young child does with a pile of anything, and this Sort Classify and Count Worksheet turns that instinct into real math. Before a kindergartner can add or compare, she has to see that a group of mixed things can be split into categories, that each category holds a number, and that those numbers can be lined up against each other. That is the whole of standard K.MD.B.3 — classify objects into given categories, count the objects in each category, then sort the categories by how many. This page walks a child through all three steps in one sitting.

The worksheet has two parts that build on each other. At the top, twelve shapes sit scrambled in one box: circles, squares, and triangles, every one of them the same color so the only way to tell them apart is by their form. Underneath, three cards each show one shape with an empty box, and the child counts that kind and writes how many. Then three fill-in-the-bubble questions ask which shape has four, which has the most, and which has the fewest — so the counts get used, not just written down. Hand it out as morning work, as a math center, or after a hands-on sorting activity with buttons or blocks.

Three things make this Sort Classify and Count Worksheet more than a counting page. First, the shapes are scattered rather than grouped, so a child has to hold one category in mind while her eye hunts across the whole box — that is the actual skill, and a pre-sorted picture never asks for it. Second, all twelve shapes share one color, so nothing can be sorted by a shortcut; form is the only attribute on offer. Third, the last three questions turn the three counts into a comparison, which is where sorting stops being tidying up and starts being data.

Teachers and parents can stretch this kindergarten sorting worksheet a long way. Ask the child to point to each shape as she counts it, so the count is one-to-one. Have her color all the circles one shade and all the triangles another, then count again and see that nothing changed. Tip out a handful of buttons, pasta shapes, or plastic animals and sort them into three piles on the table, counting each pile aloud. Finish by asking which pile she would need to make bigger for the numbers to match.
