About this resource

Description

The /our/ sound is one of the trickiest jumps a beginning reader makes, because the same sound arrives wearing two different spellings — our in hour and our, and ower in tower, flower, shower and power. This our sound worksheet teaches that sound the way children actually meet it: inside a story. Instead of drilling a column of words in isolation, students read a short original narrative built around the pattern, then answer questions that prove they understood what they decoded.

The worksheet opens with The Tower, a 113-word first grade story about two friends who spend a rainy hour building a block tower that grows taller than the flower on the windowsill. Every sentence is short and decodable, and the /our/ words are spread naturally through the text rather than crowded into one line. A full-color illustration sets the scene so emerging readers have a picture to lean on. On the second page, students fill in the bubble beside the best answer for five multiple-choice questions — four that check comprehension of the story and one that asks them to spot the word carrying the target sound. The answer key is the final page.

What’s Included

  • One printable PDF worksheet, 3 pages
  • An original 1st grade phonics story, The Tower, built on the /our/ sound
  • Five multiple-choice comprehension questions with fill-in-the-bubble answers
  • A full-color illustrated scene that supports the text
  • A complete answer key

Three reasons this our sound worksheet helps children. First, reading a pattern in connected text is what transfers — a child who can read tower on a flashcard often stalls on it mid-sentence, and this sheet closes that gap. Second, the comprehension questions keep decoding honest: a student has to understand the story, not just sound it out. Third, the reading level is measured rather than guessed, so the passage sits inside the first grade band and never quietly runs a grade or two hard.

Teachers and parents can use this first grade phonics story worksheet for guided reading groups, phonics centers, morning work, homework, or a quick assessment. Try reading the story aloud together first, then have children reread it independently and highlight every word with the /our/ sound before they answer the questions. Ask them to add one more sentence of their own using tower, hour or shower. For partner work, one child reads a sentence and the other finds the target word.
