Subtracting fractions is the moment a student stops thinking about numbers and starts thinking about pieces. Before two amounts can be taken apart, the pieces they stand for have to be the same size, which means finding a common denominator, renaming both fractions, and only then subtracting. This subtracting fractions word problems worksheet puts that skill where fifth graders will actually meet it — inside real situations about running, rope, water, rocks, and ribbon, where the fractions come with unlike denominators and the answer has to be written in simplest form.
