About this resource

Description

Ask a fifth grader where a school comes from and the answer is rarely “everyone paid for it a little at a time.” This taxes reading comprehension worksheet gives students an original, on-grade non-fiction text that explains what a tax is, where the money goes, and why a town can afford things no single family could buy alone. The passage covers sales tax at the register, income tax on the money adults earn, and property tax on a house or a piece of land, then follows all three into the same pool of revenue and out again through a budget. Every idea is introduced in plain language and defined in the sentence that uses it first, so a student meets the vocabulary and the concept together.

This 5th grade economics worksheet is a four-page, no-prep printable. Two pages carry the passage, one page carries the questions, and the last page is the answer key. Students answer four multiple-choice questions drawn from across both passage pages, covering main idea, a vocabulary term defined in context, a cause-and-effect explanation, and an applied inference about which purchase would carry no sales tax. A written response then asks them to name two things the text says tax money paid for and cite evidence for how a town can afford them. Because every answer is anchored in the text, this works as a reading assessment as easily as a social studies lesson.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • A 795-word original non-fiction passage, 4 multiple-choice questions and 1 written response

Three things make this taxes reading comprehension worksheet worth the class period. First, the passage is written to fifth-grade measures rather than trimmed to fit a page, so students get real reading stamina practice across two pages instead of a paragraph and a quiz. Second, the questions are spread deliberately across the whole text, which means a student cannot answer them from the first page alone. Third, the topic is treated as civics, not opinion: the text explains how the money is collected and spent and stops there, so it fits comfortably in a classroom, a homeschool morning, or a co-op group.

Ways to Use It

  • Have students underline the definition of each bold economic term as they read.
  • Pair it with a real receipt and ask students to find the sales tax line themselves.
  • Use the written response as a short constructed-response practice before a state test.
  • Follow up by listing the shared places in your own town and sorting them by who pays.
