Description
Needs and wants is one of the first economics ideas a fourth grader meets, and it is the one that sticks with them the longest. A need is something a person must have in order to live and stay well — food, water, clothing, shelter. A want is something a person would enjoy but could live without. This needs and wants reading comprehension worksheet teaches that difference the way a reading lesson should: through a short story a student has to read closely, think about, and then explain in their own words.
Built as a 4th grade economics worksheet with a reading focus, page one holds an original 289-word story about a classroom store where every student gets twenty play dollars and one hard rule — rent is due on Friday. One shopper spends everything in nine minutes; the other buys needs first and saves for the rent. Page two holds the comprehension questions, and page three is the complete answer key. Print it, hand it out, and let students read the story once for enjoyment and a second time with a pencil in hand. It works just as well as a guided reading passage, a social studies warm-up, or independent morning work.
