Description
Putting words in alphabetical order is one of the first real research skills a young student learns, and this Thanksgiving ABC Order Worksheet gives that skill a warm, familiar setting. Second graders already know the alphabet song, but sorting a list of words is a different job: they have to hold the alphabet in their heads, compare one word against another, and keep going when two words begin with the very same letter. That last step is what moves a child from first-letter sorting to true alphabetical order, and it is the step this page is built around.
The worksheet shows eight Thanksgiving words in a word box, printed deliberately out of order. Students read the box, then write the words on the numbered lines from first to last. Four of the eight words share a first letter with another word, so the child cannot finish the page by looking at initial letters alone. Directions on the page name the strategy plainly, so the sheet works for independent seat work, a small guided group, or a quick review before a dictionary or glossary lesson.
