About this resource

Description

Putting words in alphabetical order is one of the first research skills a young reader ever uses, and this ABC order worksheet gives second graders a clean, focused way to practice it. Children learn to compare the first letter of each word, and then — when two words begin with the same letter — to look at the second letter to decide which one comes first. That single move is what turns guessing into a reliable strategy, and it is the step that carries students into dictionaries, glossaries, indexes and word lists for the rest of elementary school.

This printable gives students ten familiar animal words in a mixed-up word box and ten numbered writing lines below it. Students read the box, find the word that comes first alphabetically, and write it on line one, working their way down until every word has been used exactly once. Four of the ten words share a first letter, so the sheet quietly forces the second-letter comparison instead of letting students stop at the first letter. Print this ABC order worksheet for morning work, a literacy center, a partner activity, homework, or a quick review before a spelling or dictionary lesson.

What’s Included

  • One printable worksheet page with a ten-word animal word box
  • Ten numbered writing lines sized for second-grade handwriting
  • Four same-initial word pairs that require second-letter ordering
  • Original watercolor pond artwork featuring two of the word box words
  • A full answer key on the final page

Three Reasons This Helps Kids

  • It builds a real strategy, not a habit: students compare letter by letter instead of scanning for a word that looks right.
  • It uses concrete, high-frequency animal words, so no reading difficulty gets in the way of the ordering skill itself.
  • It transfers directly to dictionaries, glossaries, indexes and classroom word walls, where alphabetical order is a daily tool.

Teacher and Parent Ideas

Before students write, read the ten words aloud together and ask which letters repeat — hearing that bear and bunny both start with b sets up the whole task. Have partners cut apart a copy of the word box and physically slide the words into order before recording their answers on the lines. For an extension, ask students to add two more animal words of their own and decide where each one belongs in the finished list. This 2nd grade alphabetical order worksheet also makes an easy re-teach page: keep a clean copy for any student who needs another pass at the second-letter rule.
