Reading comprehension is the skill of reading a story and truly understanding what happened, who it happened to, and why it matters. Second graders are moving from sounding out words to holding a whole story in their heads, and that jump takes practice with real narratives and real questions. The The New Kid Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives students a short, warm story about a boy named Jude who joins a new class, then asks them to go back into the text to find the answers. Along the way, students practice recalling key details, following the order of events, and drawing simple conclusions about how a character feels.
This printable is built as a three-page set. Page one holds the illustrated story and a full-color scene, page two holds the questions, and the final page is a complete answer key for the teacher. Hand out the story first and let students read it once on their own and once with a partner.
