About this resource
Description
This Washington D.C. Word Search Worksheet helps students learn the words that name the people, places, and landmarks of the nation’s capital. Washington D.C. is the city where the country makes its laws, and the vocabulary that goes with it — capital, dome, marble, museum, river, cherry — shows up again and again in social studies lessons about states, regions, and government. A word search gives students a low-pressure way to meet those words first, and the meaning items that follow ask them to prove they understand what each one actually means.
The worksheet has two parts on a single page, with a full answer key on the back. In Part A, students hunt for six words hidden across, down, and on the diagonal in an eleven-by-eleven letter grid, circling each one as they find it. In Part B, they read six short sentences and write the box word that matches the meaning of the bold clue word — a building becomes a museum, a round roof becomes a dome, a wide stream becomes a river. Print the Washington D.C. Word Search Worksheet and hand it out as a warm-up, a center activity, an early-finisher page, or homework. This 3rd grade states worksheet is ready to use with no prep beyond the printer.
What’s Included
- One printable page with a word bank, an eleven-by-eleven word search puzzle, and six meaning items
- Six Washington D.C. vocabulary words: capital, cherry, dome, marble, museum, and river
- Words hidden across, down, and on the diagonal, so no two puzzles solve the same way
- Original claymation-style artwork of a domed government building and a blossoming cherry tree
- A complete answer key showing every circled word and every written answer
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- It builds real vocabulary, not just puzzle skill. Finding a word in a grid is recognition; writing it into a sentence that defines it is understanding. Part B turns the puzzle into a comprehension check.
- It makes letter patterns visible. Scanning rows, columns, and diagonals for a target word gives students focused practice at holding a spelling in mind while they search — the same skill that supports fluent reading and careful proofreading.
- It connects words to a real place. Every word on the page names something a student can picture in Washington D.C., so the vocabulary sticks to a location rather than floating free on a list.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
- Before students start, read the six box words aloud together and ask what each one might have to do with a capital city.
- Time Part A as a friendly challenge, then slow right down for Part B and talk through each clue as a class.
- Ask early finishers to draw one of the six words on the back and label their drawing.
- Pair the page with a map of the United States and find Washington D.C. and the Potomac River together.
