Description
Building Quick Sight Word Reading
This word recognition activity turns sight word practice into a popcorn movie-night board game. Children read Pre-Primer and Primer Dolch words such as come, look, said, have, they and want, the common words that show up on almost every page of an early reader. When kids can read these words on sight, they spend less energy sounding out and more energy understanding the story.
How to Play Popcorn Sight Words
Print the 36 word cards, the Popcorn Path game board and the paper clip spinner, then cut apart the cards and the four popcorn pawns. Players spin, move their pawn, take the top card and read the word. A child who reads the word correctly keeps the card, and a missed word goes to the bottom of the pile to try again later. Landing on a popcorn space means reading two cards. When a pawn reaches FINISH, the player holding the most cards wins. This word recognition activity is a perfect kindergarten dolch words activity for a reading center or small group, and it also gives 1st grade students fast, fun review. A matching practice page checks that each child can spot a sight word among look-alike words.
