From our teachers' playbook

Words kids know in a snap

What do kids learn about sight words?

Sight words are the little words that show up everywhere, like the, and, is, said and was. Kids learn to read them instantly so their reading flows instead of stopping on every word. Many sight words can actually be sounded out, like can and it. Others have a tricky part, like the "ai" in said, so we call those "heart words": learn the tricky part by heart. Kindergarteners usually start with a small set, and 1st and 2nd graders work through lists like Fry's first 300. The click is when a child stops sounding out "the" and just reads it.

Our favorite ways to teach sight words

Sight words stick with lots of quick, joyful repetition. Here's how we do it.

One word, one song

Introduce a new word with its own song, like the I Song. Kids sing along and spell it with their arms in the air. A catchy tune gives every word a memory hook.

Why it works: words set to a repeating melody are easier to recall than the same words spoken (Wallace, 1994).

Flash and pile

Flash sight word cards for a quick daily round. Words a child reads in under three seconds go in the "got it" pile, others go back in the deck. Kids love watching their pile get taller.

Why it works: pulling an answer out of memory makes it stick far better than rereading it, one of the strongest findings in learning research (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Ten words a week

Work through Fry's 300 list ten words at a time. Each Monday add ten new words, and keep reviewing old ones every day. Little and often beats a giant list all at once.

Why it works: spreading practice out over days is one of the two most effective study methods in a major research review (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Questions parents and teachers ask about sight words

What are sight words?

Sight words are common words kids learn to read instantly, like the, and, you and said. Knowing them on sight helps kids read smoothly and focus on meaning.

How many sight words should a kindergartener know?

It varies by school, but many kindergarteners learn about 25 to 50 sight words by the end of the year. First graders often learn the first 100 Fry words.

What is the difference between Dolch and Fry sight words?

Both are lists of high-frequency words. Dolch has about 220 words plus nouns, grouped by grade, while Fry has 1,000 words ordered by how often they appear in text.

How do I teach sight words at home?

Pick a few words at a time. Say the word, spell it, say it again, then find it in a book. Songs, flash cards and quick games keep it fun.

Can sight words be sounded out?

Many can! Words like and, it and can follow phonics rules. Only some, like said and of, have tricky parts that kids learn by heart.
