From our teachers' playbook

Little scientists, big questions

What do 2nd graders learn in science?

Second grade science is all about observing the world and asking why. Kids explore what plants need to grow (sunlight and water), how animals help plants spread seeds, and which living things live in each habitat. They study matter: sorting materials by properties like hard, soft, bendy or shiny, and seeing how heating or cooling can change them, like ice → water. In earth science they learn how wind and water slowly change the land. Along the way they track weather and seasons and learn about life cycles. The click moment is when a child makes a prediction, tests it and says "I was right!" (or "Whoa, I was wrong!").

Our favorite ways to teach 2nd grade science

Science is a doing subject. These moves get kids observing, predicting and explaining.

Sing the big ideas

A science song is a fast way to lock in vocabulary. Play the water cycle song before the lesson, then pause it on each stage and have kids act it out: evaporation arms rising, condensation hugging tight. Kids remember the motions on the test.

Why it works: a catchy, repeating tune gives the brain a hook to hang words on, so sung text is remembered better (Wallace, 1994).

Grow it and track it

Plant beans in two cups, one in the window and one in a dark closet. Kids draw and measure each plant every few days. By week two the difference speaks for itself, and they've learned what plants need by seeing it happen.

Why it works: kids understand an idea best when they touch it, then draw it, then write it, the order the U.S. Department of Education recommends for elementary math.

Draw the life cycle

After watching or reading about butterflies, have kids draw each stage in a circle with arrows. Then cover one stage and ask what's missing. Drawing a cycle shows it never really ends, which is the big idea.

Why it works: pairing a picture with each word gives kids two ways to remember it, a well-tested principle of how people learn (Mayer, 2009).

Questions parents and teachers ask us

What science topics are taught in 2nd grade?

Second graders usually study plants and what they need, animals and habitats, properties of matter, and how wind and water change the land. Many classes also study weather, seasons and life cycles.

How can I do science with my 2nd grader at home?

Grow a plant from seed, melt and refreeze ice, or go on a nature walk to observe bugs and leaves. Ask "What do you think will happen?" before every experiment. Making predictions is real science.

What are properties of matter for 2nd graders?

Properties are things you can observe about a material, like its color, texture, hardness and whether it bends or floats. Second graders sort and compare materials using these properties.

What do plants need to grow?

Plants need sunlight, water, air and space to grow, plus nutrients from soil. Second graders often test this by growing plants with and without light or water and comparing the results.
