About this resource

Description

Learning about habitats helps young students understand where animals live and why. A habitat is the place that gives an animal the food, water, shelter, and space it needs to survive. When second graders can name the common habitats around them — the ocean, a pond, the desert, a forest, and the grassland — they begin to see that living things are matched to their surroundings. This matching animal habitats worksheet gives students a simple, hands-on way to practice that idea by connecting five familiar animals to the places they call home.

This animal habitat matching worksheet is a no-prep, two-page printable built for 2nd Grade science. In Part A, students draw a line from each animal picture — a whale, a camel, a bear, a zebra, and a duck — to the habitat where it lives. In Part B, students use a word box to complete three sentences that describe what each habitat is like, with one extra word in the box acting as a distractor so students have to read closely instead of guessing. Use it as a warm-up, a science center, independent practice, an early-finisher task, or a quick check after a habitats read-aloud.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • 5 picture-to-habitat matching items and 3 word-bank fill-in-the-blank sentences

There are three clear reasons this resource helps kids learn this skill. First, the picture matching in this matching animal habitats worksheet builds habitat vocabulary before students have to spell a single word, so the science thinking comes first. Second, the fill-in-the-blank sentences ask students to read a short description and choose the one habitat that fits it, which is real evidence-based reasoning rather than guessing. Third, the included answer key lets students check their own work, or lets you grade a whole class in seconds, so feedback arrives while the learning is still fresh.

Teachers and parents can stretch this skill in plenty of fun ways. Take a habitat walk around the schoolyard and list the animals you find and what each one needs. Build shoebox habitat dioramas and label the food, water, and shelter inside each one. Sort animal picture cards into habitat hoops on the carpet. Read a nonfiction animal book and stop to ask what would happen if that animal moved to a different habitat. Or play a guessing game where one student describes a habitat and the class names an animal that lives there.
