From our teachers' playbook

Equal parts, big ideas

What do kids learn about fractions?

Fractions start with sharing fairly. In 1st and 2nd grade, kids split shapes into halves, thirds and fourths and learn that the parts must be equal. Third graders discover that fractions are numbers with their own spot on a number line, and that 1/2 = 2/4. In 4th grade they find equivalent fractions, compare fractions with different denominators, add and subtract like fractions and mixed numbers, and connect tenths to decimals. Fifth graders add and subtract unlike fractions and begin multiplying them. The click is when a child realizes that a bigger bottom number means smaller pieces, so 1/8 < 1/4.

Our favorite ways to teach fractions

Fractions confuse kids when they're only symbols. These moves make them real first.

Fold it, shade it, name it

Give each child paper strips and have them fold one into halves, one into fourths and one into eighths. They shade the same amount on each and line them up. Seeing that 1/2, 2/4 and 4/8 cover the same length beats any rule about multiplying top and bottom.

Why it works: going from real objects to pictures to symbols is a core recommendation of the U.S. Department of Education's elementary math guide.

Put them on the line

Draw a number line from 0 to 1 and ask kids where 1/4 lives, then 3/4, then 1/2. Next stretch it to 2 and place 5/4. The number line is what turns fractions from pieces of pizza into real numbers.

Why it works: pairing a picture with each word gives kids two ways to remember it, a well-tested principle of how people learn (Mayer, 2009).

Which is bigger, and why?

Write 3/8 and 3/5 and ask kids to decide which is bigger without any math, just reasoning. Someone always says, "Fifths are bigger pieces, so three of them is more!" Kids who explain their thinking catch their own misconceptions.

Why it works: using clear, consistent math words out loud is one of the U.S. Department of Education's recommendations for elementary math.

Fractions: your questions

What grade do kids learn fractions?

Kids split shapes into halves and fourths in 1st and 2nd grade. Third grade is the big fraction year, with number lines and equivalent fractions. Fourth and fifth graders add, subtract and multiply fractions and connect them to decimals.

What's the easiest way to explain a fraction?

The bottom number tells how many equal parts the whole is cut into. The top number tells how many of those parts you have. So 3/4 means the whole is cut into 4 equal parts and you have 3.

Why do kids think 1/8 is bigger than 1/4?

Because 8 is bigger than 4! Show them that cutting a pizza into 8 slices makes each slice smaller than cutting it into 4. Folding paper strips makes this click quickly.

How do you find equivalent fractions?

Multiply or divide the top and bottom by the same number. For example, 1/2 × 2/2 = 2/4. Kids understand this best after they've seen it with folded paper or fraction strips.

How can I practice fractions at home?

Cook together and talk about half a cup or a quarter teaspoon, cut sandwiches into equal parts, or share a bag of snacks fairly. Ask, "What fraction did you get?"
