Sorting Plural Nouns Game cover with Roxy the Funzy, a goose, a fox and a bubble blaster

Our new plural nouns game turns a grammar sort into a comic-book adventure. Kids say each word out loud with Roxy the Funzy, then shoot it at the rule that makes it plural.

You know the moment: a child writes “two foxs” or “three gooses.” Most of the time they know a plural means more than one. What trips them up is which rule to use, and that is exactly what this game practices.

Roxy loads one noun at a time into her bubble blaster. Kids say it, “one box, two boxes,” listen for the extra part, and fire it at Add -s, Add -es or Change the Word. A right shot sticks with a POW and turns plural.

The short version
  • A tap-only plural nouns game for 3rd grade (great for 2nd grade practice too).
  • Round 1: sort nine nouns into Add -s, Add -es and Change the Word.
  • Round 2: finish three comic speech bubbles with the right plural noun.
  • Based on the Sorting Plural Nouns Worksheet, so you can play it, then print it.

Why kids love this plural nouns game

Grammar practice can feel like a list. This game feels like a comic book. Every right shot goes POW, a full target drops with a bang, and each finished sentence becomes a comic panel.

Roxy says it all

Every word, sentence and hint is read aloud and captioned, so kids can play on their own.

Three rule targets

Add -s, Add -es and Change the Word, each in its own color, like a plural rules anchor chart.

POW, BONK and bang

Right shots stick with a POW; a wrong shot bonks off with a silly hint.

Comic speech bubbles

In round 2, the plural noun completes a sentence and the comic panel comes to life.

How to play the plural nouns game

Press Play and Roxy takes it from there. Each round starts with a short “Watch me!” example, then it’s the child’s turn.

  1. Watch Roxy

“One man, two… mans? That sounds silly! The word changes. Men!” Roxy fires man at Change the Word.

  2. Say it and shoot

A noun loads into the blaster. Kids say it out loud, one ___, two ___, and tap the rule that makes it plural.

  3. Finish the sentence

In round 2, kids shoot the noun at its rule to finish a comic speech bubble: “Two cats sat on the fence.”

Which rule makes fox plural?
A: add -s · B: add -es · C: change the word. Say it out loud, then pop the right letter!
One fox, two foxes! Fox ends in x, so we add -es. Now play the real game.
Plural nouns game: box flies into the Add -es target and turns into boxes with a POW
“One box, two boxes!” Box ends in x, so it goes to Add -es.

What kids learn from the plural nouns game

The game follows the way teachers teach plural nouns: form and use regular and irregular plural nouns (L.3.1b, and irregular plurals in L.2.1b).

  1. Plural means more than one

Roxy starts with the big idea: one cat is cute, but two cats? Double the fun!

  2. Say it out loud

The frame one ___, two ___ helps kids hear the extra part that -es adds after s, x, ch and sh.

  3. Sort by the rule

The three targets work like a classroom anchor chart, one color per rule.

  4. Words that change

Goose, foot and child change the whole word: geese, feet, children.

  5. Hints that name the mix-up

A wrong shot gets a hint like “Gooses? That sounds silly!”, never just the answer.

  6. A think-aloud model

Each round opens with “Watch me!”, then “Your turn!”, the way teachers model a new skill.

Teacher tip: play it, then print it

Play the game on the whiteboard as a class, then hand out the Sorting Plural Nouns Worksheet. Before each answer, have kids say it together: one fox, two foxes. Check off each step as your class finishes it:

Plural nouns game FAQ

What is the Sorting Plural Nouns Game?

The Sorting Plural Nouns Game is an online grammar game for kids from Have Fun Teaching. Roxy the Funzy loads one noun at a time into her comic-book bubble blaster. Kids say the word out loud and shoot it at the rule that makes it plural: add -s, add -es, or change the word. Then they finish comic speech bubbles with the right plural noun.

What grade is the plural nouns game for?

It is made for 3rd grade and works well for 2nd grade practice and review. Every word, sentence and hint is read aloud and captioned, so kids can play on their own.

How does the game teach plural nouns?

Kids say each noun in the frame teachers use, one box, two boxes, so they hear the extra part that -es adds. The three targets work like a plural rules anchor chart, and a wrong shot gets a hint that names the real mix-up, like gooses or foots, and the rule behind it.

Can kids play it on a tablet or phone?

Yes. The game runs in the browser on computers, tablets, phones, Chromebooks and interactive whiteboards. There is nothing to install.

Is there a printable version?

Yes. The game is based on the Sorting Plural Nouns Worksheet, so kids can play the game and then practice the same skill on paper.

Ready to make every plural go POW with Roxy?

Press Play and let your kids say each noun, pick its rule and finish the comic, all on their own.

Works on computers, tablets, phones and interactive whiteboards.
