From our teachers' playbook

Learning that feels like game night

What can kids learn from our learning games?

Our games turn practice into play. Kids work on letters A through E and their sounds, short vowels, vowel teams, prefixes like pre, dis and mis, Greek and Latin roots, cause and effect, prepositions, plural nouns, place value and the calendar. Each game gives quick feedback, so kids know right away if they got it. A game is perfect for the moment a skill is almost there and just needs more reps, like reading dis + like = dislike without stopping to think.

How we teach with games

Games work best with a goal and a routine. Here's how we use them.

Games with a goal

Before kids start the place value game, tell them the goal: "Today we're finding the value of the tens digit." Afterward, ask two kids to explain a question they got right. A clear goal turns a fun game into focused practice.

Why it works: playful practice with a clear goal keeps kids practicing longer, and simple learning games have been shown to build real skills (Ramani and Siegler, 2008).

Warm up with yesterday

Start reading time with the short vowel review game, even weeks after you taught short vowels. A quick replay keeps old skills fresh while you move on.

Why it works: spreading practice out over days is one of the two most effective study methods in a major research review (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Sort and check

Use the plural nouns sorting game as an exit ticket. Kids sort -s, -es and -ies words, and you can see at a glance who has the rules down.

Why it works: a big review of study methods ranked quick self-quizzing among the most powerful ways to remember (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Questions parents and teachers ask about learning games

Do educational games help kids learn?

Yes, especially for practicing skills kids have already been taught. Games give lots of repetition and instant feedback, and kids are happy to play again and again.

What ages are these games for?

We have games for preschool and kindergarten letter learning, phonics games for early readers, and word-study games like roots and affixes for upper elementary.

How do I use games in the classroom?

Use them as warm-ups, in centers, as exit tickets or for early finishers. Keep rounds short and tie each game to the skill you are teaching.

Can kids play these games at home?

Yes. Our games run in the browser, so kids can practice on a computer or tablet at home or at school.
