Description
Learning about a state means learning what makes it that state: its animals, its plants, its farms and its symbols. The Wisconsin Word Search Worksheet puts six real Wisconsin words in front of third graders twice over. First they hunt the words down in a letter puzzle, which forces them to read each word letter by letter, and then they match each word to a meaning, which is where the social studies actually happens. A student can finish the puzzle by pattern matching, but nobody finishes the second half without knowing what a badger is.
This 3rd grade states worksheet is built around badger, cheese, cranberry, maple, robin and violet — the Badger State’s state animal, its most famous food, its state fruit, its state tree, its state bird and its state flower. Part A is an eleven-by-eleven puzzle with the words running across, down and on the diagonal, so students have to search in every direction rather than scanning rows. Part B gives six short definitions and one writing line each. Print it as a single sheet for morning work, a states unit, an early finisher folder or a substitute day. The answer key is included as page two, with every found word circled in the grid.
