Description

How to teach Arrays

In this 2.G.2 Second Grade Common Core Lesson, students will partition a rectangle into rows and columns of the same size squares and count to find the total number of them.

Arrays will help your students organize objects to begin to learn about multiplication and division. In this lesson, students will split bars of chocolate into equal columns and rows.

Students will roll the die and then split the chocolate bar into that number of equal pieces. For additional practice, students can start with one die and then, use two dice. After the activity, students can use the activity page to continue practicing!

If you are using this lesson, your students are probably learning about arrays.

Use this Arrays and Addition Worksheet as an additional resource for your students.

You may introduce the lesson by reviewing vocabulary like rows and columns. First, display the chocolate bar mat for all students to see. Next, roll the dice to find out how many rows you will have and roll again for columns. Before distributing to students, review tips to draw equal parts. Then, distribute chocolate bar mat and dice for student practice. Finally, have students continue their practice with the worksheet independently or with a partner.
