Description
Every sentence has to end somewhere, and the mark a writer picks tells the reader exactly how to say it. A period closes a calm telling sentence, a question mark turns the same words into something that needs an answer, and an exclamation point lets a sentence cheer. This Adding End Punctuation Worksheet hands second graders six sentences with that last mark missing and asks them to listen to each one before they choose.
The sheet works in two halves. In the first part, students read a sentence, think about the way it ends, and write the end mark in the box beside it. Every sentence is built so that only one mark can be defended: a sentence that opens with a question word can only be asking, a sentence that opens with Wow or Hooray can only be exciting, and the rest are plain telling sentences. The second part turns the student into the writer. Three tags reading Telling, Asking and Exciting each sit beside a full writing line, and the student composes an original sentence to match the tag and finishes it with the right mark. Used as morning work, a literacy center task, or a short homework page, this 2nd grade punctuation worksheet takes about ten minutes and shows at a glance who can hear the difference between sentence types.

Three things make this practice stick. First, reading the sentence aloud is built into the task, so students connect punctuation to the sound of their own voice instead of memorizing a rule. Second, the sheet moves from recognizing to producing in one page: choosing a mark is the easy half, and writing a sentence that earns that mark is where the understanding shows. Third, the boxes are identical and sit in one straight column, so nothing on the page hints at which answer is coming and the student has to read every sentence to get it right.
Teachers and parents can stretch the skill in a few quick ways. Read a favorite picture book aloud and let children hold up a finger for a period, two for a question mark, and three for an exclamation point as you reach the end of each sentence. Write one sentence on a whiteboard and ask the class to say it three different ways, once for each end mark, and talk about how the meaning shifts. Or play a sorting game with sentence strips, where children group the strips into telling, asking and exciting piles before adding the marks.
