About this resource

Description

Finding the main idea of a true story is one of the biggest reading jobs a third grader has, and history passages are where that skill really pays off. This American Industrial Revolution Worksheet gives students a short, original non-fiction passage about Samuel Slater and the first water-powered cotton mill in the United States, then asks them to say what the whole passage is mostly about. The story is written at a third-grade reading level and measured against it, so children spend their attention on thinking rather than on decoding.

The passage explains how families once spun cotton into thread by hand, how Slater learned the machines at a mill in England, and how the river he chose in Rhode Island turned a great wooden wheel that ran his gears all day. It closes with the mill villages that grew up along the water. Students then answer four fill-in-the-bubble questions and one written response that asks them to pull two details from opposite ends of the text. The illustrated hero scene of the mill and its waterwheel gives young readers a picture to hold onto while they read.

What’s Included

  • One printable American Industrial Revolution Worksheet in PDF format
  • A 232-word original non-fiction passage written at a third-grade reading level
  • A full-color watercolor scene of a water-powered mill on a river
  • Four multiple-choice questions, including a main idea question
  • One written-response question with lines for two supporting details
  • A complete answer key on the final page

Three Reasons This Helps Kids

  • Naming the main idea forces a reader to hold the whole passage in mind at once instead of remembering only the last sentence.
  • Supporting a written answer with two details is the exact move state reading tests ask for, practiced here on a short, friendly text.
  • A true story about a real invention shows children that reading is how they find out how the world came to work the way it does.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents

Use this 3rd grade america worksheet to open a unit on inventions, industry, or American history, or as a reading warm-up on any day of the week. Read the passage aloud once together, then let students reread it on their own before they answer. After the questions, ask the class to point to the one sentence that helped them the most and explain why. Students who finish early can draw the mill from the passage and label the river, the wheel, and the building. The answer key on the last page makes checking fast, so the whole worksheet can be reviewed together in a few minutes.
