About this resource

Description

Consonant blends are the bridge between knowing single letters and reading real words, and the br blend is one of the first blends young readers meet. To read bread, branch, or bright, a child has to hold the /b/ and /r/ sounds together instead of sounding them out one at a time. This Brad Eats Bread BR Phonics Stories Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives first graders a short, decodable story packed with br words so they practice that blend in real reading rather than in isolation, then answer questions that show they understood what they read.

The worksheet opens with an original story about a boy named Brad who eats his breakfast on the back step and shares a bit of his bread with a little brown bird. Students read the story on page one, then move to page two and fill in the bubble beside the best answer for five comprehension questions. A final br-blend word hunt asks them to circle the five words from the story that begin with br, mixed in with look-alike b words. Use this first grade BR blends worksheet as morning work, small-group phonics practice, a reading center, or a quick homework page. Read the story aloud together first for emerging readers, or let confident readers work through the whole page independently.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • 1 illustrated decodable br-blend story, 5 multiple-choice comprehension questions, and 1 eight-word br-blend word hunt

This Brad Eats Bread BR Phonics Stories Reading Comprehension Worksheet helps children learn in three ways. First, it builds blending fluency: seeing br again and again inside connected text trains the eye and ear to treat the two letters as one smooth sound. Second, it joins phonics to meaning, because a child who decodes the words but cannot answer a question about the story has not really read it yet, and the five questions ask about what Brad ate, where he sat, and what he did with his bread. Third, the closing word hunt asks students to tell br words apart from words that only start with b, which sharpens the careful looking that accurate reading depends on.

Teachers and parents can stretch this skill well beyond the page. Go on a br hunt around the house or classroom and list everything you find, from bricks to broom to brush. Say a word and have students hold up two fingers if they hear the br blend at the beginning. Build br words with letter tiles or magnets, changing only the ending each time. Ask children to retell the story in their own words, or to draw what they think happened after the bird flew away. Finish by writing one silly sentence together that uses three br words at once.
