How to teach Beginning Consonants

Using the Brick Breaker Consonant Blends Activity, students identify the beginning consonants blends in common words using picture cards.

Being able to identify the consonants blends helps students read and write words. This activity gives them practice using common words that they will encounter in their reading.

This game can be played individually,against a partner or in a small group. Each player receives a brick breaker game mat. Select a setof picture cards to play with, either black or blue, as well as the matching blends spinner. Shufflethe picture cards and place the bricks on the game mat. The goal of the game is to clear the most bricksbefore time runs out. To clear bricks, spin the spinner to land on a consonant blend. Look at thepictures on your game board and clear the ones that begin with that blend. After clearing allmatching bricks, spin the spinner again. After playing Brick Breaker, practice identifying initial consonant blends by completing theworksheet provided.
