Fifth graders are ready for informational text that asks them to hold several ideas at once, and this broken lamp reading comprehension worksheet gives them exactly that. The passage takes the everyday moment when a lamp tips over and turns it into a clear explanation of how a lamp is actually built, which parts can be mended at home, which parts belong to an adult, and why so many broken objects are really just unassembled ones. Students read for structure, for cause and effect, and for a main idea that reaches past the example itself.
The story runs across two full passage pages, which is the reading stamina a 5th Grade student should be building. A third page holds the comprehension questions and a fourth holds the complete answer key. Four multiple choice items ask about a stated detail, the meaning of a technical word in context, a cause the writer explains, and the main idea of the whole text. A constructed response then asks students to defend a claim from the passage and cite two supporting details, which is the writing move state assessments ask for again and again.

Ask students to underline every part of a lamp the writer names and then sketch the stack from the base up, which turns the second paragraph into a labeled diagram. Have partners argue the main idea question before they mark a bubble, since three of the four options are true statements that are simply too narrow. For an extension, send students home to find one object that is an assembly and report back on which single piece would need replacing if it failed.
