About this resource

Description

Sorting animals into groups is where life science really begins, because it teaches children to look closely at a body and name what they see. Reptiles wear dry scales, amphibians have smooth wet skin and start life in the water, and insects carry six legs and a body built in three parts. This classifying reptiles, amphibians, or insects worksheet turns those three rules into something a third grader can practice, one animal at a time, until the traits become automatic.

The page opens with a word box of twelve familiar animals and a three column chart labeled Reptiles, Amphibians, and Insects. Students read each animal, decide which set of traits it matches, and write it on a line in the right column. A painted example sits under each column heading, so the chart models the very thing it is asking for. The second half of the page moves from sorting to reasoning: four trait clues describe an animal without naming it, and students write both the animal and the column it belongs to. Print the classifying reptiles, amphibians, or insects worksheet double sided and the answer key travels with the page.

What’s Included

  • One printable worksheet page plus a full answer key
  • A word box of twelve animals: alligator, ant, frog, grasshopper, honeybee, iguana, ladybug, newt, rattlesnake, salamander, toad, and turtle
  • A three column sorting chart with wide writing lines for third grade handwriting
  • Four trait clues that ask students to name an animal and its group
  • Painted examples of an iguana, a spotted salamander, and a grasshopper

Three Reasons This Helps Kids

  • It replaces memorizing lists with a rule students can apply to any new animal they meet.
  • The clue section asks for evidence, so children practice explaining why an animal belongs in a group instead of guessing.
  • Sorting twelve animals at once builds the vocabulary a science test will later expect, including scales, moist skin, and six legs.

Teacher and Parent Ideas

Read the three column headings aloud before students begin and let the class name one trait for each group from memory. Use this 3rd grade animals worksheet as a warm up before a unit on habitats, or as a quick check after one. Once the page is finished, ask students to add one animal of their own to each column and defend the choice out loud. Cutting the word box off the top turns the same chart into a sorting mat for partners, and the clue section works well as an exit ticket. The answer key makes it simple to check work as a group or to leave the page with a substitute.
