Description
Every animal on Earth needs a place where it can find food, water, shelter, and space to raise its young, and that place is called its habitat. This animal habitats worksheet gives 3rd Grade students a clear, hands-on way to practice matching living things to the environments that meet those needs. Students think about a camel, a dolphin, a polar bear, a squirrel, and a beaver, and decide whether each one belongs in a desert, an ocean, the Arctic, a forest, or a pond. Learning where an animal lives is the first step toward understanding why it lives there.
This printable animal habitat worksheet is ready to use and is split into three short parts. In Part A, students draw a line from each animal to its habitat. In Part B, they write six animals from a word bank into an Ocean box and a Forest box. In Part C, they study a desert scene, name the habitat, and explain one way the lizard fits the place it lives. Use it as morning work, as a science center, as homework, or as a quick check before a unit test. A complete answer key is included, so grading takes only a moment.

Three things make this animal habitats worksheet work well in a 3rd Grade classroom. First, it moves from easy to hard: matching builds confidence, sorting asks students to compare two environments, and the last question asks for a real explanation in the student’s own words. Second, every animal is one students already know, so their thinking goes into the habitat instead of into an unfamiliar name. Third, the desert picture gives students evidence they can point at, which is exactly the habit science standards ask for when children explain how a living thing survives where it lives.
Try a few of these ideas to stretch the lesson further. Hang four labeled paper habitats around the room and let students carry animal cards to the one that fits. Ask each child to pick one animal and draw the food, water, and shelter it would find at home. Read a nonfiction book about the desert or the ocean and list the animals you meet. Take a walk outside and record the habitats hiding in a schoolyard: under a log, in a bush, beside a puddle. Finish by asking students what would happen to their animal if its habitat changed.
