How to teach Theme
Using the Comparing Themes of Two Stories Activity, students use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the theme of two passages.
Theme is the central message of a story. The theme will help you understand the lesson the author wants you to learn from reading their writing. This activity will help your students to determine the theme of two passages while also using their compare and contrast skills.
Students will read “Needs and Wants” and “I Want That” to determine the theme of each story. Then, students will use the Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the stories on their approaches to similar themes and topics.

Finally, students share what they have read about. Once finished, students use the Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the themes and topics of each passage. This activity can be very helpful as students think about how different stories relate in their themes.
