Description
Skip counting is the bridge between counting one at a time and multiplying, and fives are where most second graders cross it first. This counting fives worksheet gives students three different ways to practise the same jump: reading tally marks, filling gaps in a number pattern, and solving a problem where counting by fives is faster than counting by ones. Fives show up everywhere a child already looks, from nickels to tally charts to the minutes on a clock, so the skill pays off immediately.
Print one copy per student and work through the parts in order. Part A shows four sets of tally marks, drawn the standard way with every fifth mark struck across the four before it, and students count the bundles by fives and write the total in the box. Part B gives three number patterns that climb by five, each with four numbers missing. Part C asks two word problems where skip counting by fives is the quickest route to the answer. An answer key is included on the last page, so checking the whole sheet takes about a minute.

Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- It builds the foundation for multiplication. A student who can count 5, 10, 15, 20 without stopping already knows the five times table in a form they can use.
- Tally marks make the fives visible. Grouping by five is not an abstract rule here; the child can see each bundle and count the bundles instead of the marks.
- It practises the same skill three ways. Reading a picture, completing a pattern, and solving a problem ask for the same counting from three directions, which is how a skill becomes automatic.
Teacher and Parent Ideas
Use this counting fives worksheet right after a lesson on tally charts or a class survey, so students count real data the same way. Hand out nickels and have students count a small pile by fives before they start Part B. For an extension, ask fast finishers to keep each Part B pattern going to 100 on the back of the page, or to write their own word problem for a partner. A five-minute skip counting chant before the worksheet gets the whole class warmed up.
