Description

How to teach CVC Words

Using this CVC Word Mats Activity from HaveFunTeaching.com, students place alphabet letter tiles on the picture cards to create CVC words.

A CVC word is a word that contains a consonant letter, followed by a Vowel letter, and ending with a consonant letter.

CVC words make up a lot of the words your students encounter as they are beginning to learn how to read. This activity gives your students practice reading CVC words with short vowel sounds, as well as practice with letter recognition.

For example, your students will have fun finding and placing the letter tiles for the word SUN. They find the S, they find the U, and they find the N. If they are just starting out with letter sounds, you can go over each individual sound: S…U…N. SUN!

Your students will continue to find and place letter tiles on the picture cards to create words. This phonics activity will help your kids learn the letters and sounds, practice phonics and reading skills, and be encouraged to find even more words that they can read!
