Before a child can add, they have to see that a number is made of smaller numbers. Six is two apples and four more apples. Ten is five and five. Using this Decomposing Numbers Assessment Worksheet, Kindergarten students look at a row of apples split into two sides, count each side, and write the two numbers that make the whole. Breaking a number apart this way is the foundation of every addition fact a child will learn, and it is exactly what Kindergarten standards ask students to show.
The Decomposing Numbers Assessment Worksheet is a two page printable. Page one holds four picture problems for the numbers 6, 9, 7 and 10. Each problem shows a group of apples on each side of a plus sign, with the total already printed in the last box, so the child counts the two sides and fills in the two missing parts.
