Adding two-digit numbers is the moment addition stops being counting and starts being place value. Second graders have to line up tens and ones, decide whether the ones column makes a new ten, and carry that ten where it belongs — and they need a lot of practice before it feels automatic. This double digit addition crossword puzzle worksheet turns that practice into a puzzle. Ten addition problems are numbered ACROSS and DOWN, and every sum a student works out gets written into the puzzle boxes one digit at a time, so the grid quietly checks their work as they go.
Students start with the ACROSS problems and add each pair of two-digit numbers. The answer goes into the numbered boxes on the puzzle, one digit per box, and then they solve the DOWN problems the same way. Because the entries cross, a digit that lands in a shared box has to agree with both answers — if it does not, the student knows to go back and add again.
