About this resource

Description

This elapsed time worksheet gives third graders a clear, step-by-step way to work out how much time has passed between a starting time and an ending time. Elapsed time is one of the trickiest ideas in third grade math, because minutes roll over at sixty instead of one hundred and the hour changes right in the middle of the count. Working with written digital times, the way a clock radio, a bus schedule, or a phone shows them, helps students see the hours and the minutes as two separate pieces they can handle one at a time.

This elapsed time worksheet keeps every problem in that written form. On the front page students work through a Start, End, and Elapsed Time table of five intervals figured to the minute. Two of them cross from morning into afternoon, one runs a clean set of whole hours, and one finishes in under an hour, so the set stays mixed instead of drilling a single move. Three story problems follow. Students find the elapsed time in the first, the ending time in the second, and the starting time in the third, which is the step most students need the most practice on. The answer key sits on page two, so the sheet can be printed and checked in seconds.

What’s Included

  • A printable two-page PDF sized for standard 8.5 x 11 paper
  • Five Start and End times written to the minute, each with a box for hours and a box for minutes
  • Two intervals that cross from A.M. into P.M. and one that lands in under an hour
  • Three word problems asking for the elapsed time, the ending time, and the starting time
  • A full answer key on the final page

Three Reasons This Helps Kids

  • Splitting an interval into hours and then minutes gives students a method they can repeat on any clock, instead of counting on their fingers and hoping.
  • Mixing whole hours, part hours, and intervals that cross noon stops students from guessing a pattern and makes them read each pair of times carefully.
  • Working backward from an ending time to a starting time builds the flexible thinking that later measurement and word problem work depends on.

Ways to Use It

Use this 3rd grade elapsed time practice as a morning warm-up, as independent work during a math rotation, or as a quick check before a unit test. Partners can take turns explaining how they counted the hours first and the minutes second, which turns the table into a talking activity. At home, families can connect the story problems to a real afternoon by timing a bike ride, a practice, or an art project and working out the elapsed time together.
