About this resource
Description
Elapsed time is the amount of time that passes between a starting time and an ending time. This Elapsed Time Hour Worksheet gives students focused practice finding how many whole hours pass between two times, first on real analog clock faces and then in everyday story problems. Reading a start time, reading an end time, and counting the hours between them is the foundation students need before they move on to half hours, quarter hours, and minutes.
With this elapsed time hour worksheet, students study a Start clock and an End clock inside each card, then write the number of hours that passed on the line below. One problem runs past 12 on the dial, so students cannot simply count forward on the numerals. Part B moves the skill into real life: one problem crosses from morning into afternoon, and one gives a starting time and a duration, so students work backward to find the ending time. Print the page, hand it out, and use the included answer key to check the work in seconds.
What’s Included
- Four elapsed time problems on coded analog clock faces, each with a Start clock and an End clock
- Two applied story problems, including one that crosses from a.m. to p.m. and one that works backward from a duration
- Roomy writing lines so every answer is written right on the page
- A complete answer key on the final page
- A print-ready PDF, perfect as a 3rd grade elapsed time worksheet for classrooms and homeschool
This worksheet helps students in three ways. First, it puts the skill on real clock faces instead of typed times, so students practice reading an analog dial while they measure the interval. Second, it mixes recognition with application, which is what standardized tests ask for. Third, the answers are all whole hours, so students can concentrate on the reasoning without getting lost in the minutes.
Teachers and parents can extend the page in simple ways. Ask students to explain out loud how they counted the hours in problem four, since that interval passes 12 on the clock. Have students act out one of the story problems with a demonstration clock, or write their own elapsed time problem about the school day and trade it with a partner. The worksheet also works well as a warm up, a homework page, or a quick check before a unit test.
