About this resource

Description

Elapsed time is the moment measurement stops being a reading skill and becomes an arithmetic one. A child who can already tell time to the minute still has to hold that time in their head, add an interval, and regroup when the minutes pass sixty. This What Time is It Elapsed Time Worksheet puts both halves of that skill on a single page: six analog clocks to read, six intervals to add, and two story problems that ask students to use the same thinking on a real schedule.

Each of the six cards shows a clock set to a starting time and a blue label naming the minutes to add. Students read the hour hand and the minute hand, add the interval, and write the ending time on the two answer lines. Four of the six problems cross the hour, so students cannot simply count forward on the same dial — they have to regroup, and one problem wraps from 11 to 12. The two word problems below ask how long a swim class lasted and what time a chore finished. Print this What Time is It Elapsed Time Worksheet as independent practice, as a math-center rotation, or as a quick formative check before a unit test. A full answer key is the second page.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • Answer key
  • 6 analog clock cards, each with a starting time and a stated minute interval
  • 4 problems that regroup past the hour, including an 11 to 12 wrap
  • 2 elapsed-time word problems with full-width answer lines

This 3rd grade elapsed time worksheet helps students in three specific ways. First, it separates the two things that usually get tangled: reading the clock happens on the card, and adding the interval happens on the lines, so a teacher can see exactly which step broke down. Second, it forces regrouping. Four of the six intervals push the minute count past sixty, which is the step children skip when every problem stays inside one hour. Third, the two word problems move the skill off the dial and onto a schedule, where elapsed time actually lives — swim class, raking leaves, the length of recess.

Teachers and parents can extend this page in a few easy directions. Hand a student a small demonstration clock and have them physically move the minute hand while a partner counts the minutes aloud. Ask children to write one new story problem using their own after-school schedule, then trade papers and solve. Post a daily “how long until” question on the board — how long until lunch, until the bus, until Friday — and let students answer on a sticky note. For children who need more support, cover the interval label and read the six clocks together first, so the reading step is secure before any adding begins.
