Sight words are the words a reader meets most often, and many of them do not follow tidy phonics rules, so children learn to know them on sight instead of sounding them out. The Fry’s 300 Sight Words List gathers the three hundred words that turn up most frequently in everyday reading and school texts, grouped in the order teachers usually introduce them. Once a second grader reads these words instantly, a large share of the words on any page is already familiar, and that frees attention for meaning instead of decoding.
This printable Fry sight words list is a clean reference chart rather than a practice page. Each of its three pages holds one hundred words in five easy-to-scan columns: the First Hundred, the Second Hundred, and the Third Hundred. Print all three pages, punch them for a reading binder, or clip a single page inside a folder and work through it one column at a time. Children read down a column out loud while a partner listens, and any word that causes a pause becomes that week’s practice list.

The Fry’s 300 Sight Words List helps children read better for three reasons. First, it builds automatic recognition: seeing the same words in the same order, day after day, moves them from slow decoding into instant memory. Second, it makes progress visible, because a child can highlight every word she already owns and watch the unmarked words shrink week by week. Third, it keeps practice focused on the words that actually pay off, since these three hundred words make up a very large portion of the text in early readers, chapter books, and classroom directions.
Teachers and parents can stretch the chart well past plain reading. Cut a page into strips and race a timer to see how many words a child can read in one minute, then chart the score each Friday. Play flashlight tag by calling a word and letting your child find it on the chart. Ask for a silly sentence that uses three words from the same column. Post a page beside the writing table so young writers can spell these words correctly on their own, and send a copy home so families can practice in the car.
