About this resource

Description

When two vowels team up to make one long sound, reading gets a lot easier, and the Vowel Teams Game turns that big second grade phonics step into a soccer game at the stadium. Second graders read words with the vowel teams ai, ay, ee, ea, oa, ow, ie and igh, like rain, tray, bee, leaf, boat, bowl, pie and light, and kick the soccer ball at every word with the right team. Playing a vowel teams game again and again helps children spot the two letters that work together and say the long vowel sound they make, so new words like snail and toast are easy to sound out.

In this vowel team phonics game, a big soccer goal stands in a sunny paper cut-out stadium, and three round target boards hang inside it. Every board shows a picture with its word on a tag underneath. Kids slide the soccer ball left and right and swipe up to kick it at the board with the right vowel team, or simply tap a board and the ball kicks itself there. The four rounds build step by step: ai and ay for the long a sound, ee and ea for the long e sound, oa and ow for the long o sound, and ie and igh for the long i sound. Look-alike words with short vowels, like cat, bed, pot and pig, hang in the goal too, so children really have to read the word. Doodles reads every direction out loud and says the long vowel sound after every goal, and a wrong board just bounces the ball back with a gentle “try again.” Play it in your browser on a phone, tablet, Chromebook or computer, or download the offline version for a PC or Mac with no internet needed.

What’s Included

  • Online game that plays in any browser on desktop, tablet and phone
  • Offline download for Windows PC and Mac (just unzip and double-click)
  • 4 rounds: ai and ay, ee and ea, oa and ow, ie and igh, each with short vowel look-alike words mixed in
  • Voice directions that model every long vowel sound, soccer sound effects and a star score at the end

Here are three reasons this vowel teams game helps kids learn. First, each round pairs two vowel teams that make the same long sound, which is exactly how second grade phonics lessons teach them. Second, every target board shows a picture and the printed word, so children connect the letters they see with the sound they hear. Third, kicking the ball, the golden ball surprise, the volley of goals at the end of each round and the stars keep kids excited to play again and get even more reading practice.

Teachers and parents can carry the learning off the screen. Make a team chart with columns for ai, ay, ee, ea, oa, ow, ie and igh, then go on a word hunt in a favorite book and sort the words you find. Write a vowel team word on a card, cover the team with your finger, and ask your child which two letters are hiding. Play “change one team” by swapping the vowel team in a word, like boat to beat or tail to toil, and read the new word together.
