Description
This expanded notation place value worksheet helps fifth graders see exactly what every digit in a decimal number is worth. Expanded notation writes a number as a sum of each digit multiplied by its place value, so 36.47 becomes 3 × 10 + 6 × 1 + 4 × 0.1 + 7 × 0.01. Once students can take a decimal apart this way, comparing, rounding, and adding decimals all make far more sense.
The page opens with a worked example, then asks students to write five decimals to the thousandths in expanded notation. Most of those numbers hide a zero in a different place, which is the real test of the skill. Next, students turn three expanded forms back into standard form, including one written in place-value words. The last item shows a classmate’s mistake and asks students to explain it by naming the correct decimal place.
