The Place Value Expanded Notation Worksheet gives 4th grade students focused practice writing multi-digit whole numbers as the sum of the value of every digit. Expanded notation is the bridge between reading a number and understanding it, because it makes a student name what each digit is actually worth. A place value expanded notation worksheet like this one keeps that thinking visible on the page, so a teacher can see right away whether a student knows that the 7 in 274,318 stands for 70,000 and not 7,000.
This printable moves through three parts. In Part A, students write five whole numbers through the hundred thousands in expanded notation. Three of those numbers hold an interior zero, which is exactly where expanded notation breaks down for most fourth graders. In Part B, students reverse the process and write the standard form for each expanded sum. Part C is a short error analysis: students read about a fruit farm that picked 274,318 apples, study the expanded notation another student wrote, and explain the mistake in their own words. Three things make this activity worth the ten minutes it takes. First, it splits a large number into values a student can actually reason about, which makes comparing, rounding, and adding multi-digit numbers far easier later on. Second, working in both directions, from number to expansion and from expansion back to number, stops students from copying a pattern instead of understanding it.
