Some words spell the /f/ sound with a single letter f, and others spell that very same sound with the digraph ph. That small difference trips up a lot of second graders, because their ears hear one sound while their eyes have to choose between two spellings. The F or PH Worksheet gives students focused practice deciding which spelling a word actually uses, so they stop guessing and start recognizing the pattern in the words they read every day.
This ph digraph worksheet works well as an independent morning starter, a small-group phonics review, or homework that reinforces the day’s lesson. Students say each word out loud, listen for the /f/ sound, and write f or ph on the line to finish words such as leaf, elephant, trophy, sofa, roof, dolphin, five, and alphabet. Then they move to a spelling-choice section and circle the correctly spelled word in each pair, sorting out phone from fone and graph from graf.
