This kimchi reading comprehension worksheet turns a famous side dish into a lesson in reading and kitchen science. Kimchi is the salted, fermented vegetable dish served at nearly every meal in Korea, and it has lasted for hundreds of years because of tiny helpers most people never see. Fifth graders read an original informational passage that explains what kimchi is, how it is made, and why fermenting was one of the best ways to keep food before anyone owned a fridge.
The two-page passage walks through each step in order: salting napa cabbage, mixing the red pepper paste, packing the jar, and waiting while bacteria turn sugars into sour acids. It also explains the autumn tradition of kimjang and the clay onggi pots families once buried in the ground. After reading, students answer four multiple-choice questions and write a two-part constructed response that uses details from the text.
